Fed Up is a movie about food. Too much food and the wrong kind. And the consequent problems that will never go away, no matter how much one exercises.
Good title, right? Especially after the round of graduation parties and Memorial Day celebrations.
I went to see this movie by myself at the local artsy theatre (Camelview) for three reasons–my teen boys are old enough to do their own summer shopping with gift cards, the showtime was right, and I’m always interested in any extra motivation to eat healthier. Plus, I seem to become the source of all food during the summer, as contrasted with the school year, during which my children eat more independently.
Though the movie was more expose’ than recipe for a new meal plan, it was well worth the 1.5 hour and 7$ investment. Who knew that lobbyists on behalf of the sugar industry made sure we did not get the “% of daily allowance” info about sugar on product labels—probably because our daily sugar requirement is satisfied by a bowl of cereal and a little glass of juice!
I’m hoping I can influence my family and myself over this summer to go back to foods I can recognize—the things my grandmother ate. I’m not averse to ice cream or a cookie—no misrepresentation or subterfuge there—but you can bet I’m reading labels way more carefully. I thought we were doing pretty well, but the Feeneys can do way better. How about your family?
